How to plan an island-hopping sailing route in the South Funen Archipelago

A practical guide to planning your island-hopping trip by sailboat, including which islands to visit first, harbour facilities and sailing distances in nautical miles. Get a clear overview of routes and stops around Faaborg.

Faaborg Harbour

Faaborg Harbour is a well-equipped base for sailing in the South Funen Archipelago, offering around 75 dedicated guest berths (out of 650 total) plus additional free berths marked green/red. The harbour is sheltered in all wind directions and located just a few minutes’ walk from the town centre with shops and restaurants.

Advance booking is available via MarinaBooking (4 berths, fee DKK 75). Reserved arrivals: 12:00–17:00; departure by 12:00. Non-reserved spots are first come – arrival before 14:00 is recommended in high season.

Facilities:

  • Showers and toilets (chip access)
  • Electricity and water at berths
  • Laundry
  • Free WiFi
  • BBQ and playground areas
  • Slipway (DKK 50)
  • Cranes, pump-out and waste station

Faaborg → Bjørnø (approx. 3 NM)

Bjørnø Mooring

Bjørnø is ideal for sailors seeking peace. There is space for approx. 4–5 keelboats and a similar number of motorboats at the small pier. No harbour master – overnight stay DKK 75 (self-service).

Facilities:

  • Free electricity
  • Public toilet and water
  • Picnic tables
  • Small local farm shop

A quiet, minimal stop focused on nature and tranquillity.

Bjørnø → Lyø (approx. 6 NM)

Lyø Harbour

Lyø Harbour offers approx. 85 guest berths and good facilities in scenic surroundings. The harbour can be approached day and night in clear visibility, but the entrance is unmarked and the ferry berth must not be used.

In peak season, availability becomes limited during the afternoon – arrive early or anchor at Revkrogen and enter next morning.

Facilities:

  • Showers and toilets
  • Sailor’s lounge
  • BBQ areas
  • Beach and family-friendly area

Lyø → Avernakø (approx. 5 NM)

Avernakø Harbour

Avernakø Harbour offers around 25 guest berths in a relaxed island setting close to local life and a small grocery store. Early arrival (before 14:00) is recommended in summer. Payment is via self-service solutions (see link).

Facilities:

  • Showers and toilets
  • Electricity and water
  • Nearby grocery store

For a quieter stay, consider Korshavn on the east coast.

Avernakø → Faaborg (approx. 9 NM – via Svelmø)

On your return to Faaborg, consider setting a course via Svelmø. The island is uninhabited and privately owned, so landing is not permitted – but sailing past is an experience in itself.

Here, nature feels untouched. You may spot seals resting on the shores and seabirds gliding overhead, with nothing but wind and water around you. It’s a calm and scenic finale to your journey through the South Funen Archipelago.
