Island Hopping in The South Funen Archipelago

The South Funen Archipelago is made for island hopping – and from Faaborg, the islands are closer than you think. We offer two ways to experience the sea and island life.

On the day trip, you set course for Lyø and Avernakø – two islands with their own distinct character and an atmosphere that is instantly infectious. People here have chosen island life deliberately, and you feel it in every encounter and every smile along the way. If you want to take your time and experience all three islands, the two-day trip adds Bjørnø as the third and final chapter – an island so small and unspoiled it feels like a secret.

Island hopping is not just a summer tradition – it is an experience for all seasons. From May to August, the island restaurants open their doors and offer culinary experiences with views across the archipelago. In the low season, the pace slows and a unique stillness settles over the islands – there is space to breathe and connect with nature up close.

Hungry travellers need not worry. Avernakø Landhotel is open year-round – call ahead and a warm meal is guaranteed. Before boarding, stop by Vesterport bakery in Faaborg and pack a delicious sandwich for the journey, or pick up food to-go from one of the town's cafés – perfect for the trip.

Tickets for the island ferry are available via the ferry website.

If you are arriving by boat, The South Funen Archipelago reveals itself in an entirely different way. There are no timetables or ferry schedules to set the pace – you choose your own course and experience Avernakø, Lyø and Bjørnø at your own rhythm. Drop anchor, go ashore and feel island life at its closest.

Along the way, you can sail past Svelmø – a privately owned island that sits like an undiscovered gem in the archipelago, offering a atmosphere and natural impression that is hard to forget. These are the kind of moments that only happen when the sea is your mode of transport.

If you are a sailor, visit our dedicated sailing page for harbour information and inspiration for your island hopping route. Fair winds.
