Experience Lyø, Avernakø and Bjørnø over two days

A complete island hopping experience from Faaborg lets you explore the South Funen Archipelago over two unhurried days. On day one, the journey takes you to Lyø and Avernakø, where landscapes, community and island culture set the scene. Day two is dedicated to the special atmosphere of Bjørnø, before returning to Faaborg with time to enjoy dinner in the historic harbour town.

Day 1: Lyø and Avernakø

Getting started from Faaborg is easy. Take the bus and get off at Banegårdspladsen, or park your car free of charge near the harbour and walk directly to the ferry.

Morning departure from Faaborg

Departure from Faaborg at 10:00
Arrival at Lyø at 10:40

A relaxed morning on Lyø

Lyø is a small and peaceful island where open landscapes and traces of history blend naturally with everyday island life. The pace slows down here, and experiences are never far apart.

Along the way, you can experience:

  • Klokkestenen, a distinctive carved stone with deep historical roots
  • The Wind Phone, a poetic place inviting reflection
  • Bjerget, a scenic walking route of approx. 2–3 km through gentle hills with views of the sea

Outside the high season from May to August, we recommend picking up lunch at Vesterport Bakery in Faaborg and bringing it with you to Lyø. This gives you the freedom to eat when hunger strikes – perhaps overlooking the fields or by the water.

Bicycle rental is available on Lyø if you would like to explore more of the island at your own pace.

Afternoon on Avernakø

Departure from Lyø at 14:40
Arrival at Avernakø at 15:10

Avernakø consists of the two islands Avernak and Korsholm, connected by the narrow causeway known as Drejet. The open landscape makes the island ideal for exploring by bicycle.

  • A cycling route of approx. 16 km through the landscape and along the coast
  • A visit to Avernakø village with small farm shops and local island life
  • The iconic maypole, symbolising the island’s traditions and strong sense of community

Bicycles can be rented at Avernakø Harbour for DKK 50.

Dinner is available on Avernakø all year round. Avernakø Landhotel is open throughout the year, but we recommend calling ahead to reserve a table. During the high season, dining options are also available near the harbour.

There are good accommodation options on both Lyø and Avernakø, allowing you to end the day in peace once the ferries have departed.

Day 2: Bjørnø and an evening in Faaborg

Day two takes you to Bjørnø, a small island where the pace slows down all by itself. Here, there is space to wander without a plan, let your gaze drift and lose track of time as the archipelago unfolds around you.

On the island, you will find a small local shop, a gallery and a vineyard, all contributing to Bjørnø’s distinctive character. Small stops that invite curiosity and informal breaks along the way.

Bjørnø is also home to Økobo, an organic farm with close ties to Faaborg. Økobo supplies ingredients to many of the town’s restaurants and is, at the same time, a lively and welcoming place to visit.

During the high season, burgers are served from Økobo’s food truck, and near the farm there is a small area with pigs and goats that visitors can get up close to. A calm and atmospheric spot overlooking the archipelago, where it is easy to stay longer than planned.

Return to Faaborg and enjoy a delicious dinner

After visiting Bjørnø, the journey continues back to Faaborg, where the island hopping experience can be rounded off with dinner in the charming market town. Restaurants, cafés and the harbour setting provide a gentle conclusion to two days in the South Funen Archipelago.
