The island Lyø
Visit Lyø – island hopping, nature and culture in the South Funen Archipelago.
Just 7 km southwest of Faaborg lies Lyø, a 605-hectare island with around 100 inhabitants. The island is about 4 km wide and offers rich cultural history, beautiful nature, and charming village life.
Lyø Village and atmosphere
At the heart of the island lies Lyø Village with its church and unique round churchyard. Narrow lanes wind between half-timbered houses and five village ponds. Many houses date from the eighteenth century, some even older—forming one of Denmark’s most fascinating historic village environments.
Nature and heritage
Lyø is famous for its Bell Stone (Lyø Dolmen)—a Stone Age chamber tomb that emits bell-like tones when struck. The island also offers fine beaches, excellent opportunities for angling in the South Funen Archipelago, and a rich birdlife with ducks, waders, and terns.
Harbour, activities, and ferry access
On the north side lies Lyø Marina with 100 berths. The island is reachable via Ø-færgen ferry from Faaborg—see timetable and book tickets on their official site VisitFaaborgVisitFaaborg. From the marina, enjoy the horse-drawn carriage tour, departing every Saturday at 10:45. The one-hour ride ends with a warm drink with the coachman. Price: DKK 125 per person. Max 8 people. Booking required: tel. +45 2122 5611.
Historic events
In 1223, King Valdemar the Victorious was ambushed on Lyø by Count Henry of Schwerin and taken prisoner in Germany. In 1225 he had to pay a large ransom for his freedom—a dramatic event that etched Lyø into Danish history.
