Catch Sea Trout at One of the Archipelago’s Best and Most Beautiful Fishing Spots
On Avernakø, you can experience one of the most fascinating fishing adventures imaginable.
Sea trout are caught on the island all year round, with peak seasons in spring and autumn. One of the great advantages of fishing on an island – and Avernakø in particular – is that you’re never far from a good fishing spot, and no matter which way the wind blows, there’s always somewhere sheltered and promising to cast your line.
Encircling the island are 20 kilometres of coastline hiding numerous “hot spots” where the silvery trout can be tempted. The island is actually divided into two parts – Korshavn to the east and Avernak to the west. A causeway connects them, making it easy for anglers to move quickly and smoothly between different coastal locations.
Along the coast, in addition to excellent fishing, you can enjoy watching the rich birdlife that rests and feeds in the area. The wide salt meadows are home to Arctic terns, lapwings and redshanks; along the shoreline, you’ll find eiders, goldeneyes and shelducks, while above, the ever-hungry herring gulls soar.
However, anglers should show consideration during the bird nesting season from April to July.
The coastal fishing is top-notch all around the island, and no matter the wind direction, you can always find good spots and stretches of productive water. Still, there are certain areas that are always worth a little extra attention.
Selected Spots:
THE ISLAND’S LARGEST REEF
Located just east of the ferry terminal. The reef is characterised by several mussel colonies, as well as seaweed and stones in the area. There’s a strong current on and around the reef.MUNKE BEACH / BEFORE THE CAUSEWAY
A stretch featuring both stones and eelgrass. You’ll often find schools of smaller fish here – but where there are small ones, a big one usually lurks nearby. Fish on both sides of Munke Beach.NAKKEODDE – on Avernakø’s easternmost shoreline
Fish on both sides of the small reef. It’s not only the reef that holds fish. A good spot in spring as well as on a warm summer night.REV TRILLE / KROGEN
At the southeastern tip, you’ll find another prominent reef (closed during the nesting season from 1 March to 15 July). The spot offers eelgrass beds and many small sandbars. Here, you can find hunting sea trout in the shallow water.SOUTHWEST OF THE CAUSEWAY
Steep cliffs drop straight into the sea, with large boulders along the shoreline. Deep water and big rocks. This stretch also fishes well in onshore winds during spring, when the large trout move close inshore.
