In the Footsteps of the Funen Painters

Explore Faaborg and its surrounding landscapes and discover the places that inspired the Funen Painters around 1900. This unique experience allows you to see the scenery through the artists’ eyes, standing in the exact locations where many of their paintings were created.  

Golden Frames in the Landscape

Every year, a series of large empty golden frames is brought out from the Faaborg Museum collection and placed throughout Faaborg and the surrounding countryside. The frames mark the exact spots where the Funen Painters found inspiration for their artworks. Each frame includes a reproduction of the original painting and tells the story behind it. Stand where the artist once stood and compare today’s view with the landscape as it appeared more than a century ago.  

Art Meets Nature

Many of the Funen Painters – including Jens Birkholm, Peter Hansen, Anna Syberg and Fritz Syberg – grew up in and around Faaborg. The local hills, villages, coastline and rural life became important motifs in their work.   Svanninge Bakker and Svanninge Bjerge are among South Funen’s most iconic landscapes. In 2018, the area was selected as one of the 15 landscapes included in Denmark’s Nature Canon.   Most of the Funen Painters’ works can be experienced today at Faaborg Museum.
